The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Glitch That Ruined Everything

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX is a gorgeous little Switch remake of a beloved game for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. It’s really pretty, it features all the classic Pokemon like Pikachu and Mudkip, and it has that classic Roguelike gameplay from the original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team.

There is, though, one feature which (we hope at least) hasn’t been brought across from the original versions of these games to the spiffy new remake. When it initially shipped, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team on the DS had a horrifying glitch that destroyed players’ Game Boy collections.

This bug was so severe that there was a product recall across Japan. All possible copies of Blue Rescue Team were returned to Nintendo and replaced, in order to spare unwitting gamers from the fatal flaw within the game.

This wasn’t the only bug present in a Pokemon game during this era. Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire had a (thankfully far less damaging) bug which stopped berry plants from growing. This required a worldwide recall, but as it wasn’t a crucial fix, not everyone took advantage of the recall or was even aware of it.

Anyway, we’re excited to see Rescue Team DX release on Friday. Here’s hoping you enjoy it as much as you hope to, if not more!
